Covering the Golf Beat

Start Here

  1. Introduce yourself to Coach Becerra and explain that you are covering Bellville Golf for the BVP Newsroom.
  2. Ask how he prefers to be contacted and how far in advance interviews, photography, or tournament coverage should be arranged.
  3. Request the boys’ and girls’ schedules, including tournaments, district competition, and anticipated postseason dates.
  4. Ask where and when the teams practice and whether reporters may attend.
  5. Find out which golf courses Bellville uses for practices and tournaments.
  6. Ask how official individual scores, team totals, standings, and tournament results will be communicated.
  7. Request the current rosters and identify returning golfers, new varsity players, seniors, and team leaders.
  8. Ask which tournaments or courses are expected to present the greatest challenges.
  9. Check regularly with Coach Becerra for schedule changes, results, developing stories, and coverage opportunities.
  10. Submit possible stories as pitches before beginning full coverage unless your teacher tells you otherwise.

Your Responsibilities

  • Check for Golf updates at least once each news cycle.

  • Track tournaments, individual scores, team totals, district competition, and postseason advancement.

  • Watch for personal-best rounds, medalist performances, close finishes, and important team results.

  • Look for golfers demonstrating improvement, consistency, leadership, or composure under pressure.

  • Follow the preparation behind tournament results, including practice, course management, and mental focus.

  • Pitch promising stories to the newsroom.

  • Arrange interviews, photography, video, and tournament coverage in advance.

  • Confirm player names, scores, team totals, placements, awards, and advancement before publication.

  • Follow up after tournaments for official results, photographs, reactions, and information about the next competition.

  • Explain more than the final score by identifying the holes, decisions, conditions, or recoveries that shaped the round.

Important

Golf includes both individual and team competition. A golfer may place individually even when Bellville does not win the team competition, and the team may advance without one player receiving an individual award. Clearly identify whether a result, placement, or qualification belongs to an individual golfer or the team.

Lower scores are better in golf. Confirm whether a reported number is an individual round, a multi-round total, or Bellville’s official team score. Verify all scores, placements, ties, awards, and advancement with Coach Becerra or an official tournament source before publication.

Golf courses remain active during practices and tournaments. Stay alert for players, carts, and incoming golf balls. Remain outside playing areas unless you have permission, silence phones and equipment during shots, and never move a ball, marker, flagstick, or another player’s equipment.

A tournament total is only the beginning of the story. Find out how the round developed—the difficult hole, recovery shot, putting performance, weather condition, course-management decision, or mental adjustment that influenced the result.
