Covering the Bellville Baseball Beat
Start Here
- Introduce yourself to Coach Morgan and explain that you are covering Bellville Baseball for the BVP Newsroom.
- Ask how he prefers to be contacted and how far in advance interviews, photography, or video coverage should be arranged.
- Request the current varsity and subvarsity schedules, including tournaments and district games.
- Ask which practices reporters may attend and which areas are restricted during games.
- Find out how rosters, statistics, scores, pitching information, and schedule changes will be communicated.
- Ask when players and coaches will be available for interviews.
- Check regularly with Coach Morgan for updates and possible stories.
- Submit possible stories as pitches before beginning full coverage unless your teacher tells you otherwise.
Your Responsibilities
- Check for baseball updates at least once each news cycle.
- Track games, tournaments, district standings, playoff races, and schedule changes.
- Watch for close games, comebacks, extra-inning finishes, winning streaks, and important district matchups.
- Look for standout pitching, hitting, fielding, baserunning, leadership, and player milestones.
- Pitch promising stories to the newsroom.
- Arrange interviews, photography, and video coverage in advance.
- Confirm scores, innings, player statistics, records, standings, and postseason honors before publication.
- Follow up after games for official results, photographs, reactions, and information about the next opponent.
- Look beyond the final score to explain the key plays, strategy, adjustments, and turning points.
Important
Baseball statistics can be recorded differently by different people. Confirm hits, errors, runs batted in, pitching decisions, strikeouts, records, and other statistics with Coach Morgan or the official scorebook before publication.
Do not enter the field, dugout, bullpen, locker room, or team meeting without permission. Stay alert during batting practice and games—baseballs can leave the field at high speed. Do not report private medical information about an injured player.
A final score is only the beginning of the story. Explain how the game was decided—the key inning, important at-bat, defensive play, pitching performance, coaching decision, or momentum change that produced the result.
